Maurice Lucas 1913 - 2003 and the many hours he spent walking and working on Shotover Common one of his favourite places. Brass inscription plate on the left arm rest:
Valerie Lucas 1926 - 2008 Wife of Maurice, who sadly passed away on 3rd October. She too, loved to spend time on Shotover. Maurice Lucas 1913-2003 was one of the most active members of Shotover Preservation Society. From the earliest days of the society he ran volunteer working parties on the hill spreading his infectious enthusiasm and conservation skills to all who came in contact with him. Maurice was a "doer" with no time for committees and bureaucracy. Even in his eighty seventh year he turned up with his spade on his shoulder as the first volunteer to help clear out the jungle in the Horspath railway cutting to convert it into a nature reserve. Before joining Shotover Preservation Society Maurice was a distinguished army officer and the retired sales director of Frank Cooper's Oxford Marmalade, a business originating in 1874, when Maurice's maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane Cooper (née Gill), made a 76lb batch of marmalade to her secret recipe.
